Kine A week said “Brand new powerful ‘crooks fall out’ was peopled with a colourful variety out-of crucial and you will arresting characters, that, skilfully manipulated by publisher and you can director, enable the flick to help you tread liquids effectively. It is merely with the finish it starts to falter, however the slap-right up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Excellently staged and smartly dialogued, it’ll have no higher challenge within the life style down their extremely unsightly label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The film motions at the a simple speed, the fresh talk is slick and you can characterisations basically effective. Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes head this new shed expertly, given that detective try enjoyed significant aplomb because of the that person character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding the New Yorker listed “This terse and tight flick noir try predicated on new intimate and top-notch problems of the name reputation, the fresh criminal genius (starred of the Cock Powell) trailing a chic unlawful gambling enterprise. The film’s copywriter and movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, to possess mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) worked on casino and you can dated a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely controlled body language out of like and you can threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly cocky photo (also his political conscience) get this pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of the genre.” [ ten ]

Pic keeps motion and suspense, and you may specific short meets regarding jokes to provide preferences. Adept performances because of the Cock Powell, since a gambling household overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, and up the rating . As the spot comes after a familiar pattern, the fresh characterizations is actually fresh as well as the performances sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you will topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera angles arrive occasionally in order to heighten desire and you may briefly arrest the attention. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling since the manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, original author and you may affiliate music producer, also aids in making it a flaccid manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its mainly a matter of seeing Mr. Powell undergo his paces smartly while a massive cast from actors and actresses bring him customary support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good absolutely nothing woman just who brings out the brand new best in him and you may Ellen Received is the easy and you may slinky vixen whom gets him towards the jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does another type of in a position journey since the a tired police inspector just who finally shuts possible. Significant amounts of drinking and you may smoking is accomplished from the every worried.” [ a dozen ]
